Portuguese Charter for Diversity (CPD)

In March 2016 the Portuguese Charter for Diversity was developed, which has more than 200 signatory institutions, including several higher education institutions.

Egas Moniz became a signatory in 2018 of the Portuguese Charter for Diversity (CPD).

The Charter for Diversity, an initiative of the European Commission, is one of the voluntary instruments created with the aim of encouraging employers to implement and develop internal policies and practices to promote diversity.

Valuing diversity means mobilising the differences and similarities of each person for the benefit of the organisation, so that they can contribute equally to the development of each institution's business. Besides being an ethical imperative, it contributes to its growth, sustainability and economic competitiveness.

The Charter's principle is Diversity, understood as the recognition, respect and valuing of difference(s) among people, including in particular differences related to sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, belief, territory of origin, culture, language, nationality, birth, ancestry, age, political, ideological or social orientation, marital status, family situation, economic situation, health status, disability, personal style and education.

Creating an inclusive environment is not just about adopting partial measures for the inclusion of a certain group, but about generating environments that favour all and each with all of their characteristics. It is about formatting a way of thinking and acting transversal to the whole organisation and where all play a role.

It is intended that diversity policies recognise, understand and value what unites us and what differentiates us as a potential source of innovation, problem solving, customer focus, creativity and employee involvement.

In terms of the current practices of Egas Moniz, the following should be highlighted

  • The reception and support to refugees in the scope of teaching and research;
  • Free dental care for refugees;
  • The exemption from work, from classes and from tests for religious reasons;
  • The staff hiring policies that include disabled people.
